As 27 + years of experience in the 5-string bluegrass banjo, I'm often amazed at the difference in learning "landscape" of today compared to yesteryear. (When was the past? Hmmm ...) Nearly two unique learning aids that have been available long ago were vinyl records and tablature. And tablature was really very difficult to achieve. These boys and girls who tell me they learned to pick altogether by playing vinyl records and again, trying to imitate what they were hearing, yes I am impressed. I take things by ear, now that I have some ability, but I do not know if I had it in me to learn from scratch of that way. Kudos to them.
Today, there are several aids to learning any instrument, not just 5 string bluegrass banjo. All online, and web cam lessons banjo instructional DVD for electronic instruments. A surprising proportion of things can still be found for free. (You can visit my website, located at the bottom of this article, for more information about the products and tools or to ask questions and my recommendations.)
A major advance is the music notation software that is fully equipped, but surprisingly affordable ... even free. One of the most popular brands music notation software allows you to write tablature tabs on the right can be viewed on the computer screen. You can add the sounds of accompanying instruments can play what is in the score through computer speakers, and you can even find deposits of the songs already written and waiting for you to download, read with the software. For learning songs that you can not beat that! Open the song, get it from memory, playing over the speakers to hear how it sounds, accuracy even use the computer while playing as metronome. There are some high-end versions of music notation software, but the most popular brand will have limited free version and a $ 60 version with all payment functions. I highly recommend this love and learn songs using this tool.
Every student of music since time immemorial has been punished on the use of a metronome. It is vital for their development. My favorite is a fully computerized metronome version that lives on your computer and played through your computer speakers. Not free but has some great features, the best of it is something that is called a speed drill. This gradually add speed to your game, something very important for banjo players. You can find paid versions to download free versions or simply that the right to live on the Internet. Anyway, some of them are "better mousetrap" when it comes to metronomes. Be sure to ask for my recommendation.
Even before working with tablature or metronomes is a very important skill to develop: tuning your banjo. Almost all string instrument players use a handheld, portable electronic tuner of some sort, but I recently discovered a strobe tuner style for my banjo with a unbelievable price tag of $ 10. (If you have not heard of strobe-style tuner, consult my blog for an article I wrote about this type of tuner.) The only challenge ... and this could be a deal breaker for you ... is that it needs to be used on an iPod Touch or iPhone, because it is a piece of software written for these devices. But if you have one of these devices, then the banjo and the iPhone / iPod is a perfect marriage.
Speaking of the iPhone / iPod Touch, there are several pieces of software (known as applications), written for players of string instruments banjo pickers, in general, can be used in these devices. Seekers chords and applications of music theory and tuners, and so on ...
As the idea of simulating the full band experience, while practice without the hassle of a group of people invade your space every time you play? Well, you can find a program offering comprehensive software that does just that. It is the same as having all the other tools of this traditional bluegrass ... This software plays the loop that have been established, including the chords you specify and equipment it takes to choose for the other instruments to play. You just sit in the jam and play. This can be really useful if your goal is to play with his banjo.
This is not an exhaustive list, and I did not go into detail about the brand names, but I hope that maybe opened eyes to the technological possibilities when it comes to learning. Take time to research the tools and techniques that are out there and get contact me if you have further questions. I'm always happy to help!
